Why this survey?

To understand the needs of refugees from Ukraine and adapt volunteer services accordingly, surveys were conducted and data was collected across Germany (see map). In addition, the study examined which aspects have become more prominent (job search, childcare, etc.) or remained unchanged (housing, language) compared to the results from 2022–2023.

By length of stay

One of the key findings of the surveys is how priorities change with the duration of stay in the country.

By age group

It is also interesting to compare the distribution of these responses across different age groups.

  • The most active participants were aged 30 to 59.
  • Qualifications become harder to acquire with age.
  • Older respondents (60+) prioritize health issues.
  • For parents, raising children matters as much as healthcare.
  • The youngest respondents are most affected by loneliness.

Key findings at a glance

1

Language comes first

For newcomers and long-term residents alike, language is the biggest challenge – named by 50% or more.

2

Work gains importance

The longer people stay, the more job search, education and retraining matter – while housing, medical and bureaucracy problems decrease after two years.

3

Loneliness follows arrival

Only after settling in do loneliness and psychological problems become noticeable – most strongly among 18- to 29-year-olds.

4

Health matters most at 60+

Among respondents aged 60+, medical issues come to the fore: 34% compared with 20–25% in other age groups.
